Some time ago I promised Petrus Plancius to post some scans of Khnopff’s photos of Bruges, the ones on which he based his famous drawings of the city.

As usual, memory deceived me.

Finally being able to look into the matter again, I must say that he based his drawing on the photos taken by Rodenbach for Bruges a la mort, as well as on simple post cards. But it does seem to be the case that he avoided physical return to the city after moving to Brussels at age 7. He told one of his biographers that he was sure the place was quite spoiled. I know precisely what he means. I am appalled when I go into the Downtown famous-Barr store here now: it is completely spoiled (they even call it a Macy’s). But the truth is, if I went back in a time machine to 1968, the store I would see that way would seem spoiled and ruined compared to the one I carry in my memory. Strange what we form attachments to.

Behind the cut are some illustrative scans.

And here is the Khnopff's hosue in Bruges (which he never rendered). Note that it is not just the townhouse, but also the structure continuing out of the picture to the left, and the courtyard on the other side of the buildings:

(note that these are thumbnails leading to really huge scans, if anyone wants them--they aren't that good though--all this is based on the 2004 exhibition catalog which I have never been able to get good scans from, even suing professional grade scanners in the art department at the university--there must be something about the printing...).

Khnopff’s grandfather owned a castle at Grembergen, since destroyed (probably in one of the wars, but I see no definite information on the point in the catalog), where he was actually born. Does anyone have a photo or other representation of that?

Finally, is anyone brave enough to offer an opinion of the character of Khnopff’s relations with his sister Marguerite? It is a subject I am quite undecided upon.

The last of the Khnopff pictures is the one that I like best. I didn't about the Khnopff house, I think I can place that. Seeing pictures of Bruges fills me with nostalgia, it is too perfect to exist. Although it must have been even more wonderful when it was more closed in on itself in the 19th Century, it is not really spoiled, a good less so than Oxford, say, but suffers from an excess of visitors whom one can avoid if one goes at the right time or gets away from the most frequented areas. The town is very well maintained and lively, it might perhaps have felt a bit tatty and decayed - and moribund - in the 19th century, so there have possibly been good developments too. Thank you for these, I hope you have recovered from your sleepless night. Were Rodenbach's photographs published in the original edition of Bruges-la-Morte?

Yes they were.

I notice that the Picasa hsoting service ahs 27,000 photos marked Bruges, virtually all touristic as far as I can tell.

These somehow reminded me of the film 'Mill of the Stone Women' - http://www.mondomacabrodvd.com/mod107pp.html - if you haven't seen it, I have a strange feeling you might like it...

I saw something simialr to this, a French production called The Crimson Executioner when I encountered it. It featured a soft-core version of the Hell Passion from the end of 120 Days of Sodom.

I can't say I am going to rush out to buy your recomendation because of the very peculair situation we find ourselves in. Since the earliest infacny of our daughter (whose second birthday is tomorrow)I have only been able to view DVDs of three films: the full swedish TV version of Fanny and Alexander (in five minute installments over a couple weeks), and Godzilla vs. King Kong, and King Kong vs. Mecha-Kong. But the unwatched DVDs have been piling up (there must be 40 or 50 of them, including many Bunuels and all the Kubricks). Surely this situation will change soon.

Now that I think of it, what a quaint expression 'rush out to buy' is now, as though there were some physical store where one could go to buy DVDs other than those featuring Thomas the Tank Engine.

Remember the days when we could actually watch interesting foreign films, or even--gasp!--go to the theater now and then? One of my favorite times was when we went to Webster University to see La Belle et la Bete, Cocteau's 1945(?)version, on a real movie screen. And who was that actress I adored, the one who starred in The Swimming Pool? I can't even remember her name.

Ah, well, one of these days the children will be more self-sufficient and have more advanced tastes... surely A. will outgrow Godzilla, and M. Thomas and Friends...
