This is image is surprisingly common on the internet. The shoes were evidently hand-decorated by a woman as a wedding present for her son-in-law:
I can't decide if it would a good thing or not if such items were to be mass-produced.

I think so too, but then, I'm not very fond of athletic shoes in general. I like sensible shoes.

Technically, those are not athletic shoes. Athletes wear more robust shoes.

True. One couldn't, say, run a marathon in those. It seems to me at one point that style, or some variation, was what basketball players wore although the one above looks somewhat modified (apart from the tapestry, of course).
