Louis Wain

You can fin the whole Kaleidoscopic series here, along with a few others.

Interestingly, the degeneration here from representation to complete abstraction is an unquestioned descent into madness. That makes Wain to my mind more interesting than a mere cat illustrator.

Gislibertus--sorry. This is all a co-incidence, I assure you.

Wain was 'rediscovered' a few years ago, and his pictures often appear on greetings cards here. His standard fare is not merely kitsch, it is the kind of kitsch that is beyond a joke. I should definitely break off diplomatic relations with someone who sent me a card with something like this on it:

Much more interesting, as you say, when he went mad and entered his Van Gogh period! Then his paintings come to look like designs for a neon lighting display.

His work always seemed too creative to me to be mere kitsch.

Hey, I just happened upon your journal from the Art Nouveau community. I was wondering: who is the artist of this piece? http://picasaweb.google.com/Anebo10/Varia/photo#5114867442585137874
