Interestingly, the degeneration here from representation to complete abstraction is an unquestioned descent into madness. That makes Wain to my mind more interesting than a mere cat illustrator.

Wain was 'rediscovered' a few years ago, and his pictures often appear on greetings cards here. His standard fare is not merely kitsch, it is the kind of kitsch that is beyond a joke. I should definitely break off diplomatic relations with someone who sent me a card with something like this on it:


Much more interesting, as you say, when he went mad and entered his Van Gogh period! Then his paintings come to look like designs for a neon lighting display.
