All my suspicions confirmed! I'm just glad these jokers didn't make up Rome and the Romans as well.

(I always thought Antioch might have been a massive practical joke, based on the lack of appropriately impressive material remains. This was in third year when I was going slightly crazy; we had a module on Roman Syria and the lecturer was trying to cram three hundred years, several thousand slides and god knows how much territory into a year, so I might have misunderstood. I had this hope that when people passed their PhD, someone senior took them aside and explained that Antioch had only been a little rural town and it was all a complete hoax that it had ever been one of the major cities of the east. And since I've still got at least two years to go, I guess there's time to be told it yet...)

That ridiculous 'alphabet' always seemed a little far-fetched to me.

*chortle*

I knew it.

Aristophanes was the giveaway. A civilisation as lofty as the alleged ancient Greeks would've laughed at jokes the average kid outgrows at the age of eleven? Pull the other one, it's got dung beetles on.
