I don't quite recall where (but with Benicek, Plancius, etc.), but I was recently involved in a discussion about who might still believe in double predestination. I never suspected this:

Since reflexive denunciation of opponents as homosexual is usually a pretty good indicator of repressed homosexuality, I think stoning would be more poetic.

There is quite a bit of social capital to be made out of presenting oneself to be among the elect. Its especially comforting to the wealthy, who generally think: wealth = election, which was the ethos that guided the 'pilgrims' as far as I know.

omg, I saw this in the Times last night! What can I say but, uh, have fun with that, guys? I would be ashamed to discover that I was "elected" by such a demonic being as the Calvinist god.

that is a very fundamental criticism of Christianity--that god would be morally obliged to save everyone--which I've never seen adequately addressed. I've never seen any line of thought that leads so quickly to paradoxes.
