I saw this--the preview, not the film, when it was released--I must have been 11 years old. I had consciously forgotten it over the years, but recalled it clearly when I stumbled across this:

Somehow I don't think French Inellectualism would be a good fit with Hollywood (Waiting for Godot, Staring Burt Reynolds...) but since this cast did so well in The Producers and it comes from the high period of Wilder's career (The Producers, Everything You Wanted to Know about Sex, Young Frankenstein, Willy Wonka...and then SilverSteak?) I may look into it. I guess I may actually be able to start watching films in a regular way around Christmas.

I saw it when it hit the Midwest, in the late 1970s. I remember it being quite funny. It was part of a series of "art films" that some company bundled together as a series, maybe hoping they could go "mainstream" or something. Others in the series were a film about Luther; The Iceman Cometh, In the Realm of the Senses, Cry the Beloved Country, and a few others.

Some of us may not only come to a bad end in the process of trying to mantain our ideas of individuality but how are we going to try and explain, what we thought it was about, in the first place? Thanks to paedagogic Hollywood, it may still be possible!
The left side of my nose, however has this hard spot.
