Marten Eskil Winge
Jun. 19th, 2008 05:47 pmThanks to Onooyes (and less directly Stephanie Bean) I was introduced to Marten Winge, a Swedish artist interested in illustrating Norse Myth.
Here is a painting of Loki from 1863 (I haven't tracked down the myth yet):

And, for comparison, the same in contemporary printing:

This link seems to have all the rest of his work on the web:

Date: 2008-06-20 04:14 am (UTC)As I recall the myth, the Aesir put up with Loki's shenanigans time and again, until he went too far with Baldur's death and imprisonment in Hel. Then they lost their collective tempers; caught Loki and imprisoned him, and installed a snake over him, which kept dripping poison on his face. His wife catches it in a bowl, but when she turns to periodically empty it, the venom drips on Loki, who thrashes so much in agony that the earth shakes.
