Again we reach the season when fat French businessmen journey to south to line the roads wearing nothing but a pair of shorts ten sizes two small, slung udner their vast naked bellies, pregnant with cirrhosis and heart disease.

the French coutnry side is indded beautiful, esp. the forest on the run up to Dax--must include that in my novel.

It is always nice to see Pau--all the families that founded St. Louis (LaClede and Chouteau) came from there. One summer I spent researching the early hsitory of St. Louis for some display at the hisstory museum here. I found that society operated in the normal French model of patronage-clientage--and that the exact relations could be traced in the voting records (no secret ballots in thsoe days) kept after 1804, and that the fur trading firms had seized huge tracts of the missouri valley for themselves in violation of French law, and that the first Amercian military governor signed off on an obviously forged document of spanish land grants promulgated by a corporal in the Spanish army!--and then mysteriously had the money to build two mansions that are among the leading tourist traps here to this day--but my supeiors had no intest in any of that--it didn't 'have the sex'--but I'm rambling now.
