We have the habit of taking the baby into the bathroom so that the gentle noise of the vent may soothe her.

The other day I while I was pacing in there with her, I noticed, as it seemed, that the radio was also on at a low volume—I could hear the voice of the announcer plainly and the kind of mid nineteenth century English liturgical music that I can’t stand and which, until recently, the local classical radio station played far too much of. I examined the radio, however, and found it was shut off. Yet I heard the music. It must have been I decided noise being made by the vent fan that my brain was interpreting as the announcer and the familiar but disliked music.

I described the event to my wife, and she confirmed that she had often had the same experience.

Today I had much the same thing, except the music seemed a late Romantic violin concerto: Brahms or Bruch.
