First Publication

Last night Madeline came home only a few minutes before bedtime. Nevertheless, she threw herself into creating an entire book. At first she had me help her with the spelling, but then conceded that it would have to be dictated, and Mme. Malkhos and I both wrote part. She insisted on stapling it, albeit on the wrong side (perhaps he's been reading too much Hebrew), since real books are bound. The yellow strip along this binding indicates its a Little Golden Book.

Well, at first she only wanted to write that there was a lonely snowman until I explained to her that all stories have three major movements: rising action, establishing the conflict, conflict resolution and denouement. I explained this to her so that she could understand, and then she finished it, trying to have all the important elements in place.

I was very proud of her.

I especially enjoy the jubilant expression on the snowman's face!

And according to the author, his arms are up as though he were saying, "Hooray!" :)

I suppose being unconscious in the snow wouldn't be too bad for a snowman. He'd be in his element, so to speak.

Right. He wouldn't have to worry about hypothermia or anything like you or I would. He was merely exhausted but not close to death or anything. If he'd been on the beach it would have been much less certain for him. :)

I hope both but of course it will make a hard life for her. Not too practical, but the child seems to have a romantic heart.
