The fundamentalist Christians (the ones who insist that Jesus' parables are wholly accurate accounts of historical events) make up about a quarter of the population and about half of the electorate. They are vexed by (among other things) a terrible xenophobia (it comes from thinking their own community is elect and the only elect). They seem to beleive that any attmept to associate the US with other coutnries (brutish foreign places like Canada or Britain, or France--they don't even speak English!), or God help us, subject the US to international law, must be some kind of plot. Probably the Jews are behind it--not the good jews in Israel--the ones who have to rebuild the temple before it can be destroyed in the apocalypse, but the evil Jewish Bankers in New York who want to force us all to become communists.

(I'm not making any of that up or exaggerating for satire--I've seen it all on television, espoused by one or another of their 'preachers', even that last bit which I still can't get over).
