Never heard of him nor his movement (the Birmingham group were had actually liks to the Pre-Raphaelites, seemingly) before today.

My goodness, what an eccentric he must have been. I only know him very vaguely, I think just from pictures from his in the Tate; his attitude to the effects of industrialization is clear enough from this portrait of a factory-owner there:

Actually he doesn't strike me as an eccentric at all, since his views and tates seem to agree with mine. I consider Picasso the eccentirc. But then perhaps this begins to speak to another topic.

I have had a look around to see what I can find of him on the internet, and I too rather sympathize with his tastes and views; but to paint that pre-Raphaelite lady in front of that background in 1946 does strike me as being eccentric nonetheless. Not that I regard eccentricity as necessarily being anything bad.
