I've been reading more and more about slavery lately. I can only cite two instances, but two is a lot more than there used to be.

Here is a link to one local case

Six charged with torture death of Alton woman
AP/KWMU

ALTON, ILL. (2008-03-12) Six people, including three juveniles, have been charged with first degree murder and other crimes in the killing of a pregnant, developmentally disabled woman from Alton.

Police say 29-year-old Dorothy Dixon was beaten and tortured with a pellet gun and hot liquid throughout December and January.

An indictment returned last week was unsealed Monday.

Authorities say Dixon was six months pregnant when she was found dead in the basement of an Alton rental house on January 31.

The victim shared the house with several of the suspects, and police say one of the accused had been taking Dixon's Social Security check.

Judy E. Woods, 43, Michelle Riley, 35, and Michael Elliott, 18 are all accused of first-degree murder, battery and unlawful restraint.

Two of the juveniles, Benny L. Wilson, 16, and LeShelle McBride, 15, have been charged as adults. A 12 year old has been charged in juvenile court.

In another case in West Viginia, some woman and her two adult sons lived in a trailer in the countryside. One of them had a girlfriend whom he used to beat. She finally resolved to leave, but when she was sneaking out, he caught her and gave her such a viscious beating that he knew he would spend time in jail if he let her leave. So they tied her up and kept her in the trailer for a week, during which time he and his brother and his friends and his mother repatedly raped and tortured her. The girl eventually escaped and the lot of them were arrested.

My impression is that such cases are not rare (wasn't there some serial killer in California who had done this to dozens of women before being arrested? that variation seems to be more common), and usually they aren't referred to as slavery, but I can't think what else to call it.

What I want to know is what kind of barbarous ignorance could lead one to think living in a way that leads to committing these horrible crimes was a good idea? What level of unexamination could they be functioning under? How could they be so ignornat of their won happiness. I imagine it would only have taken such people a few minute to decide to kill Socrates.
