Please, please try to get shut of the Viking translation! Borges already had a translator of record when they went ahead and did what they did. His name is Norman Thomas Di Giovanni (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Thomas_di_Giovanni).

Di Giovanni really does speak Spanish and worked personally with Borges. The band of clowns (troupe of?) which Viking assembled can't even come up to the level of a clever undergraduate's efforts. They've done a horrible disservice to one of the great writers of our age, harrumph, harrumph. But then again there was money to be had, so what the hell....

So many people knew Borges it boggles the mind. One rather gets the feeling that he turned nobody away. A good friend of mine even interviewed him, back when he was a clever undergraduate in Buenos Aires.
