I agree; the force involved is horrific. But we as a society really aren't that different - instead of stuffing girls, many mothers, girls' friends, clothing industry, etc. employ a whole host of psychological tactics to make girls feel "fat and ugly" if they are more than skeletally thin. This leads to all kinds of aberrations, insecurities, eating disorders, even fatalities.
When I was in high school and college, girls were given amphetamine prescriptions to get thin. Now, minors are being given irreversible weight loss surgeries when someone else decides they're "too fat" (and this directly parallels the Mauritanian situation where mothers make the decision for the girls, as a person 16 or 17 in the USA is not generally considered capable of giving informed consent to a procedure like that.)
